Galatariotis in the lead after day 1 of the Cyprus Rally, bad luck for Al Attiyah

PRESS RELEASE

[Nicosia, Sept. 25, 2021] -
Simos Galatariotis with co-driver Antonis Ioannou won four of the five special stages of the first day of the 49th International Cyprus Rally and are in the lead, by 26.9 seconds ahead of Alexandros Tsouloftas / Stelios Elia who finished second in all five stages. Both drive a Volkswagen Polo GTi.

Cyprus Rally recordholder Nasser Al Attiyah and co-driver Matthieu Baumel are out of the race, after their Volkswagen Polo GTi went off-road at the end of the sixth and final stage of the day, causing a bush fire and the stage to be cancelled. The timely and effective intervention of the security and firefighting teams of the organizers, the Department of Forests and the Fire Service prevented the spread of the bush fire. The crew is in good health but the damage to the car is severe, which does not allow them to continue the rally.

So, Al Rawahi from Oman climbed into third place together with co-driver Al Hmoud (Jordan) in a Ford Fiesta, 5:15.2. behind Tsouloftas / Elia. Half a minute behind them are Petros Pantelis / Pampos Laos (Ford Fiesta). Leading in MERC 2 are Christodoulou with co-driver Xenophontos and a Subaru Impreza WRX while in the two-wheeled (2WD) category Televantos / Stavrou are ahead with a Peugeot 208.

Demosthenous / Pavlou (Skoda Fabia) who were having a good rally and were in fourth position of the overall classification, had an exit in SS5 and retired.
